Event Description

Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries was a time of suspicion, spells, surveillance, and supposed sacrifices; add to this a sprinkling of the patriarchy and a lack of scientific understanding and you’ve got yourself a Witchcraze!

The causes of the European Witchcraze are numerous, its innocent victims plentiful, and its legacy longstanding. Today, the world continues to be fascinated by witches and several stereotypes have arisen thanks in part to modern media portrayals. But do any of these stereotypes ring true in the historical record?

Grab your broomstick, cauldron and spell book, and join your guide as you journey back in time to the Early Modern era to discover who exactly were the witches…

There will be two Rest Less talks on this topic: the first will uncover the background to the Witchcraze and the gender stereotype associated with witches, and the second will explore the witch stereotypes surrounding age, appearance and occupation. Please make sure to sign up to both, thank you!

  • Duration: 2 x 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)

Meet the Host, Emma

Emma has a degree in History and has worked for several years as a teacher in UK secondary schools and online as a tutor. Some of her favourites periods of History include Crime and Punishment in 18th and 19th century Britain, the Russian Revolution and anything to do with witches!

For the past year and a half she has been living in multiple countries in Southeast Asia and Europe. She loves exploring these new places and learning more about their history - often these histories have been overlooked in the curriculum she teaches back home, and she hopes to shed more light on them through her informative, fun, and engaging talks.

Emma describes herself as an avid reader, intersectional feminist and cares deeply about the environment. In her spare time, she loves attending gigs and scuba diving.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)

Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
