Event Description

The dramatised monologue is the story of an ordinary Englishman who joined a Highland Regiment, the Seaforth Highlanders, and, surprisingly joined thousands of other Englishmen who fought in kilts for their country.
Spoken and acted in a way to include the audience in his reminiscence, we hear about why Harry joined up, his training, his first battle at Loos, his other battles, the nature of comradeship, and how his experiences influenced his life in the aftermath of the Great War.

The story is that of Simon’s maternal grandfather’s experiences during and after WW1.

Meet the Host, Simon Waterfield

Using my experiences as re-enactor, amateur actor, and drawing on family history, I have developed many acted monologues.

These look at historical events and people from an ordinary person’s point of view.

I have travelled the country telling these stories in castles, abbeys, priories, country houses, in a tent, under a tree in a field, in theatres, on a High Street, in village halls, in churches, in Pubs and in museums.

“If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” – Rudyard Kipling

I have been a medieval re-enactor for many years.

I have been a member of several Amateur Dramatic groups as both an actor and technical designer and operator, winning several awards for both my acting and technical work.

My clients include WIs, U3A, Active Retirement Associations, Probus, Local history clubs, The Oddfellows, English Heritage, National Trust, museums, Historical events organisers, historic houses.
