Event Description

In this series we explore the Golden Age of Spain - from the later middle ages until the death of King Charles II in 1700. Each episode will be centred around a specific topic that will explore how the Spanish empire develops, who were the main players, its challenges and moments of glory.

1 - Medieval Iberia: understanding the background of what happened in the Iberian peninsula before the formation of the empire. From the Visigoths, through the Muslim kingdom of Al-Andalus to the end of the Spanish Reconquista in 1492.

2 - The Monarchs of the Golden Age: a comprehensive study of each of the 7 monarchs from 1492 until 1700 that would rule Spain and its empire.

3 - Empire and Exploration; how did Spain end up acquiring so much land? We focus this week on learning the confines of their expansion and exploration from the Mediterranean to the Pacific. *please note this is a lecture that will cover the sensitive topic of slavery*

4 - Art and Literature in the Golden Age: we discover the true essence of the Golden Age as Spain becomes one of the most prolific countries developing world class authors and artists. Highlights - Velazquez & Cervantes

5 - Religion: do you want to learn the truth about the Spanish Inquisition? This will be your lecture. Learn about the religious turmoil in Spain during the Golden Age.

6 - Economy & End of the Empire: we assess Spain's main problem: money. We will also cover its downfall following the war of Spanish succession
