Event Description
Did you know that a textile that was hand-painted with a bamboo pen is also partially to blame for India losing her independence. The very origin of the word ‘chintz’ has been traced to early East India Company records. In the Western market, chintzes with their Indian, Chinese and Japanese design influences were very popular. This innovative and often beautiful textile revolutionized fashion, industry, and global trade.
Today, Chintz is used to describe any floral fabric. This talk will explore the history of this textile, and how a very Indian concept has been anglicized over the years.

Amee Mehta took a sabbatical from a pharmaceutical career to learn about the History of Art, and she never looked back! After studying the History of Indian and Islamic Art at SOAS, the fascination for learning the history of India spurred her to keep exploring. She started the History of Indian art online courses two years back during Covid and enjoys her learning while teaching. She has also done talks for an art gallery in India and has founded KindHeART, a registered art oriented charitable trust in UK.
