Event Description

Robin Hood is a world famous figure and the subject of numerous books, paintings and films. A hero of everyday people, who resisted the oppressive regime of laws and taxes imposed by unscrupulous rulers, robbing from the rich to give money to the poor, living a life of freedom and companionship in Sherwood Forest. But how much of what we know is true - was there a real Robin Hood behind the legends? And were the events they depict a good reflection of medieval England?

This talk will explore the history behind the stories. We will be visiting sites in and around Nottingham that are linked to Robin Hood and his world to uncover the facts that the legends were based on. From the places and historical figures that crop up in the legends to the political framework of medieval England to the documented individuals suggested as the basis for Robin Hood, we’ll be separating fact from fiction and understanding why the legends emerged, the reality they represented and why they were – and still are – important.
