Event Description

They say that a photographer is either a picture taker or a picture maker; I am firmly in the picture makers' club. While fully appreciating the "what you see is what you get" approach, I am much more interested in chasing an ever-elusive image that appears in my mind's eye, the kind of an image that conveys my feelings and emotions rather than remains a mere statement of fact.

This talk is about my approach to flower photography which is somewhat similar to portrait photography: for every flower and plant that I photograph, I always try to find a unique look, study its mood and character, unlock its hidden beauty. In doing so, I neither aim at creating an accurate natural/botanical image, nor try to picture a flower in its natural habitat. What matters is my creative interpretation of a flower image.

Meet the Host, Polina

Prior to becoming a full-time photographer Polina studied Art History at university, and then worked in several museums, galleries and picture libraries. Her favourite photographic subjects are flower portraiture and still life. These days, in addition to her own hands-on photographic work she teaches photography and gives talks to various photo clubs and associations. She also hugely enjoys creating impressionistic landscape images and photographing collectable artisan ball-jointed dolls – relatively unknown but fascinating photography subject.

Polina is an international awards winner, she is also a Lensbaby Ambassador and a member of the judging panel for the Royal Horticultural Society’s Photographic Portfolio competition, as well as the Royal Photographic Society’s Distinctions panel in the Visual Art category.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.
