Event Description

This brand new course is for those who already have some knowledge of French. As well as learning useful words and phrases, you will learn more about French grammar - delivered in the same non-terrifying way as my beginners course – allowing you to take more control over the language.

Please note that while this course is designed to stand on its own, it assumes that you are familiar with the content and grammar introduced on the beginners course, which is running alongside this one. Each lesson will build on the knowledge and skills gained in the previous week’s beginners course. If you have studied some French in the past, it is not essential to sign up for the beginners course as well, but you are very welcome to and you may find it useful as a refresher.

Week one

We’ll have a look at some of the pronunciation rules and the way some words sound differently depending on what follows them. We will also take a closer look at personal pronouns and how each one is used. Finally, we’ll look at the verb “aimer” (to like) and learn how to talk not only about your own likes and dislikes, but also about other people’s.

Week two

We’ll begin by looking at the two groups of nouns and the proper grammatical terms for them. We’ll move onto exploring adjectives and how they change according to the noun group they describe. You’ll learn how to add emphasis when talking about your likes and dislikes and we will look at a very common way of asking questions.

Week three

In this session we will bring together everything you have learnt from the previous two sessions into the context of shopping. You will learn how to compare two things, how to ask whether you can try something on and whether it’s available in different sizes or colours. Finally you will learn how to use the pronoun “it” to make your sentences flow more smoothly.

Week four

In the final week we will take a closer look at the verb “aller” meaning to go and learn the words for tomorrow, later, afterwards, etc. to discuss future plans. We will finish by revising what you have learnt over the 4 weeks so that next time you visit a French-speaking country you will be able to shop with confidence.

Meet the Host, Sally-Jayne Braisby

Sally-Jayne Braisby has had a lifelong love of languages and has wanted to speak French since she was just two years old. After enjoying modern and ancient languages at school, she did a degree in French and Spanish. Following a successful career in language-related jobs, including finance in the City of London, project management in the translation industry and exports in manufacturing, she returned to university and trained as a teacher. Never one to do things by halves, she decided to qualify for both primary and secondary education. She is now a full-time private tutor, teaching mainly languages, maths and English, including English as a foreign language. She is passionate about helping everyone learn, no matter their background, and about sharing her love of languages with the world.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)

Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
