Event Description

This eight week course is aimed at complete beginners or anybody who has forgotten all the Spanish they ever learnt!

It will cover what you need for basic communication on a trip to Spain, making sure you don’t starve or die of thirst as well as helping you to find your way around and have a polite conversation with any friendly locals you may meet. You’ll also learn the alphabet so that you can spell your own name. Each week you will learn some useful words and phrases, alongside bite-sized grammar sessions - especially designed not to be terrifying!

Let’s chase away the winter blues and start dreaming of holidays in sunny Spain.

Week 1 - 9th January

In the first week we’ll cover a few letters of the alphabet and you will learn greetings, some different types of transport, hiring a car and buying tickets.

Week 2 - 16th January

You’ll learn a few more letters of the alphabet as well as reusing some of the vocabulary from week 1 to order snacks and soft drinks in a café.

Week 3 - 23rd January

You’ll learn a few more letters of the alphabet and reuse some of what you learnt in the first two weeks to ask for a table in a restaurant and order a meal with alcoholic drinks. We’ll also look at some of the things the waiter might say to you to help you give an appropriate response.

Week 4 - 30th January

You’ll learn the last few letters of the alphabet and we’ll begin practising how to spell your own names. You’ll learn the words for various places around town that you might want to visit as a tourist as well as learning how to ask where they are and understanding a very basic response to the question.

Week 5 - 6th February

Now that you know the whole alphabet, we’ll practice spelling again and then learn the words for a few more places in town and start describing where they are on a map.

Week 6 - 13th February

This week we’ll really build on the previous two weeks. We’ll be looking at a map of a town, and begin asking for directions and understanding the most common responses.

Week 7 - 20th February

This week you will learn how to hold a basic conversation about yourself and your family, including nationalities, ages and showing photographs of family members.

Week 8 - 27th February

This will be a celebration of everything you have learnt so far. We’ll have quizzes, the chance to practise conversations and a slightly longer Q and A session to allow as many of you as possible to clarify anything from the last 7 weeks that you are still not confident with.

Please familiarise yourselves with numbers 1-10 in Spanish as much as you can before the course is due to begin, the video below as prepared by Sally-Jayne will help you learn these:

Meet the Host, Sally-Jayne Braisby

Sally-Jayne Braisby has had a lifelong love of languages and has wanted to speak French since she was just two years old. After enjoying modern and ancient languages at school, she did a degree in French and Spanish. Following a successful career in language-related jobs, including finance in the City of London, project management in the translation industry and exports in manufacturing, she returned to university and trained as a teacher. Never one to do things by halves, she decided to qualify for both primary and secondary education. She is now a full-time private tutor, teaching mainly languages, maths and English, including English as a foreign language. She is passionate about helping everyone learn, no matter their background, and about sharing her love of languages with the world.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!
