Event Description

We are going shopping! This course for beginners comprises four lessons and will run on alternate weeks. You’ll learn the words and phrases you need for a shopping spree in a country noted for its fashion, as well as some useful grammar that will be delivered in bite-sized chunks that are designed not to be terrifying. This course is for complete beginners or anyone who has forgotten all the French they ever learnt.

I can't wait to welcome you to the course and share this beautiful language with you.

Week one

In the first lesson you will learn the numbers 11-20 (please watch the video clip below for numbers 1-10). You’ll also learn the words for different colours, how to say which ones you like and don’t like and how to express a preference. In our mini grammar session we’ll look at how to make the negative form.

Week two

In the second lesson you will learn numbers up to 70. You’ll also learn some words for clothes and we’ll combine this with what you learnt in the first lesson so that you can ask for clothes in your favourite colour. In our mini grammar session we’ll look at adjectives in a bit more detail.

Week three

After recapping numbers, we’ll start using them to ask for the size you want and you’ll learn how to express an opinion about clothes – giving reasons for why you like or dislike something.

Week four

In the final lesson you will learn the words for a few accessories and how to say what you need. You will also learn to ask how much something is, and we’ll practise understanding the answer. We’ll finish with some revision and we’ll bring together everything you have learnt in the course to look at some short conversations with the shop assistant.

Meet the Host, Sally-Jayne Braisby

Sally-Jayne Braisby has had a lifelong love of languages and has wanted to speak French since she was just two years old. After enjoying modern and ancient languages at school, she did a degree in French and Spanish. Following a successful career in language-related jobs, including finance in the City of London, project management in the translation industry and exports in manufacturing, she returned to university and trained as a teacher. Never one to do things by halves, she decided to qualify for both primary and secondary education. She is now a full-time private tutor, teaching mainly languages, maths and English, including English as a foreign language. She is passionate about helping everyone learn, no matter their background, and about sharing her love of languages with the world.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

Please familiarise yourself with numbers 1-10 before beginning this course. This video is a clip from Sally-Jayne's previous taster lesson.
