Event Description

Take a trip back to the later Middle Ages and find out about the role of plants in medieval medicine. We’ll explore the medieval view of illness – what were the causes of disease thought to be? And what diseases were common? Who did you go to if you got ill and how did they diagnose you? Our main focus will be on the plants involved in the prevention and treatment of disease. Today, some of these plants have proven medicinal benefits and also other uses. A few are still used in herbal medicine – is it possible that, in some cases at least, medieval medics really did have the right idea?

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)

Meet the Host, Gwenda

Dr Gwenda Kyd is a chemist and writer with a passion for plants. She is interested in how we’ve used plants in the past and what we might potentially do with them in future. She loves learning about new plants and sharing their stories with others through writing and giving talks.  Gwenda has studied herbal medicine and some other plant-based therapies and is a Bach flower remedy practitioner.  She has published two books, Molecules, Medicines and Mischief: A Chemical Trail around Cambridge University Botanic Garden and The Plants of Dr Bach: Molecules, Remedies and Lore.
