On 11th November 1920, a grand ceremony took place in Whitehall with the triple objective of unveiling The Cenotaph, honouring the body of the Unknown Warrior on its journey to Westminster Abbey, and establishing a format for an annual commemoration of those British & Empire servicemen and women who had been killed in the First World War. In this illustrated talk, Christopher Joll shines a light on the now long-forgotten reasons for, and the events that led to, the building of the Cenotaph, the establishment of the grave of the Unknown Warrior and the annual Remembrance Day Parade.

Meet the Host, Christopher
After Oxford University, Christopher Joll spent six years as an officer in The Life Guards. Since leaving the Army he has been involved in devising major fund-raising pageants for military charities, published six works of non-fiction, and a fifteen-volume military-historical/action-adventure series. Christopher is also a guest lecturer for Noble Caledonia and the Regimental Historian of the Household Cavalry.

What if I can’t make the event?
If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.
Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?
Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.
How do I watch the live event?

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)
Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
