Event Description

Session 1 (November 4), Learning to Rug Hook on a Budget:

Participants will learn a brief history of rug hooking. Participants will also be encouraged to try their hand at this multi-generational art form, have two weeks to complete the small project and then come back to the second session to learn how to finish it off and prepare it for display.

Rug Hooking Part One Supply List

Session 2 (November 18), Preparing Your Hand Hooked Rug for Display:

There are several ways in which a hand hooked rug can be prepared for display.  Some are very labour intensive and more expensive than others.  In keeping with the theme of Part One, Rug Hooking on a Budget, you will learn how to prepare your rug for display in the way that is not only the least labour intensive, but is also the least expensive way to finish your project.

Rug Hooking Part Two Supply List

Pre-requisite: To register for this class, you must have been registered in Part 1.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)

Meet the Host, Penny

Penny is a retired museum curator with a BA in Anthropology; a BSc and an MSC in Metaphysical Philosophy. Her Grandmother and mother taught her what once would have been considered necessary women skills - sewing, cooking, knitting, rug hooking, crocheting, and embroidery. Both of them also lived through the Great Depression, when repurposing everything was a way of survival and life. As an artist who focuses on repurposing, 90-95% of her artwork and supplies are upcycled. Penny has been rug-hooking for 40 years and uses only reclaimed materials. She recently won an International Art Recycling competition with a project created using pop bottle plastic caps, tip covers of lancets, and left over ribbon.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

Resources

Learning to Rug Hook on a Budget has supplementary learning materials provided by the event host. Once you book an event, you will get access to these resources.
