Event Description
As recent State events have shown, no one does ceremonial and pageantry better than the British. But, as Christopher Joll recounts in his entertaining tour d'horizon of past Coronations, and as a curtain raiser for the big day in May, it was not always so. From the crowning of Queen Mary I to Queen Elizabeth II, this most solemn of ceremonies has more often than not been fraught with unexpected, and sometimes farcical, glitches - like the time when a sovereign was immobilised because her robes became stuck to the carpet or the time when the chandeliers at the Coronation banquet drenched the Queen Consort in hot wax.

After Oxford University, Christopher Joll spent six years as an officer in The Life Guards. Christopher is also a guest lecturer for Noble Caledonia and the Regimental Historian of the Household Cavalry.
