Event Description

The 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott was a landmark event for British legal and civil rights. Campaigners angry from signs that read ‘No Irish No Blacks No Dogs,’ decided to fight for their racial equality and social justice by starting the Bristol Bus Boycott. Their actions led to the end of ‘the colour bar’ which prevented Black and Asian people from driving the busses. Their legacy is seen today in the UK 2010 Equalities Act. The Act protects the rights of equalities groups across race, sex, religion, gender, marriage, pregnancy, age, disability and LGBTQ+ rights. This talk will chart how some of the Windrush Pioneers formed an alliance with former Bristol MP Tony Benn and found inspiration from the US and Caribbean civil rights struggles to achieve one of the great social justice achievements for all.
