Event Description
Lino printing is a type of block printing. Essentially it is using tools to carve a design into lino/ a linoleum block, roll ink onto it and then print. It is a type of printmaking that can be applied to many materials and surfaces, such as paper, fabric or wood.
Join Amy, collect your ideas and materials, and create something unexpected! This is an experimental workshop where we try things and learn techniques. No experience necessary – please join in for the joy of learning how to carve and mark make with lino, providing you with ideas which you can then continue to explore after the workshop.
During this session we will divide our time between learning simple mark making techniques with lino cut tools, before embarking on a simple design we can carve and print during the workshop.
I encourage people to take themselves off mute and to share their progress/ thoughts and questions as we work through making our prints together. We can share what we are creating and discuss what works well and what doesn’t, learning from each other.
Materials you will need:
- A pencil and paper – to draw out your design
- A thin marker, to draw design onto lino.
- Lino, such as can be found in art or craft shops. It is traditionally a grey/green colour, but is also available in other colours. See example here. You may wish to have a few small pieces, as we will create a practice piece as well as one for your design.
- Carving tools, such as these. Some are more expensive than others. I will be using wood carving tools, but choose what feels best for you.
- Block ink is ideal for this task. I shall be using block ink, but you could use acrylic paint if that’s what you have available. I will experiment with block ink, acrylic and caligo safewash ink (my personal favourite), to explore these options.
- A soft rubber roller/ brayer - this will be inked up and used to apply ink/ paint to the prints. Essdee do a blue one that will be perfect.
- An ink tray or another flat, smooth non-porous surface, such as a ceramic tile, sheet of glass or Perspex etc. This ideally needs to be wider than the width of your roller.
- Paper to print on to – thinnish paper will be best for picking up texture and detail (30g – 120gsm). Cartridge paper or printer paper will work fine. - A big spoon or baren – to apply pressure to take the print.

Amy Hutchings is a printmaker, based in Bristol, specialising in silkscreen and hand print techniques. With a passion for colour and line, her work captures the every day. Amy is also involved in many different community art projects and loves using art to engage with different communities.
Preparing for the Event
For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).
We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

What if I can’t make the event?
If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.
Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?
Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.
How do I watch the live event?
Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.
How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)
Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
