Event Description

Angkor Wat (‘The City Temple’) is a unique archaeological site in Cambodia with roughly 907 years of history. It is also the largest religious monument in the world, originally beginning its life dedicated to Hindu gods, but becoming a Buddhist site by the end of the 12th century.

‘The City Temple’ is actually a part of the 400 km2 Angkor Wat Archaeological Park. This UNESCO site contains the incredible remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, each containing dozens of temple complexes, dating from the 9th to the 15th century.

Despite its scale, magnitude and timeline, few people are aware of the history behind these ancient sites. This is partly as a result of geography, neglect, and devastating events in Cambodia’s more recent past. Join your guide and journey through the ruins of some of the most impressive monuments, including Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm, to learn more about this fascinating world time - almost - forgot.

Meet the Host, Emma

Emma has a degree in History and has worked for several years as a teacher in UK secondary schools and online as a tutor. Some of her favourites periods of History include Crime and Punishment in 18th and 19th century Britain, the Russian Revolution and anything to do with witches!

For the past year and a half she has been living in multiple countries in Southeast Asia and Europe. She loves exploring these new places and learning more about their history - often these histories have been overlooked in the curriculum she teaches back home, and she hopes to shed more light on them through her informative, fun, and engaging talks.

Emma describes herself as an avid reader, intersectional feminist and cares deeply about the environment. In her spare time, she loves attending gigs and scuba diving.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)

Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
