Event Description

A pretty cottage in a pretty, quiet village. This cottage has an interesting and significant history that affects us all. It was here a small group of farm labourers met and organised a trade union in 1834. It was in this village that six of these men were arrested, sentenced to transportation, and sent to Australia and Tasmania. Their arrest and transportation ignited a countrywide protest that shook not only Parliament but the Monarchy too. It was a major boost to the Trade Union Movement in this country and is affecting our lives even now.

Hear the story of these men, now known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs, from the mouth of one of the men, their lives, their trial, their transportation, the protests and their return.

  • Duration: 60 mins
