Event Description

The story of the Highland Clearances, of the dispossession and removal of thousands of clansmen and women by an Anglicised aristocracy is the stuff of legend and mythology. Chris Forse will investigate the truth behind the mythology. More than that, he will track the lives of those removed who found their way to North America in the late 18th and 19th Centuries, who peopled a sub-continent, fought in the wars that created the United States, and helped build a new country, Canada. Canada may not have been made for Scotsmen, but it was made by them in the exploration of land towards the Pacific Ocean and in the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. And in time the descendants of the dispossessed of Scotland became, themselves, the great dispossessors of the native peoples of North America. It is a story full of drama and tragedy and of little understood contexts.
