Event Description

This talk explores the story of the British heroine who died in Brussels in 1915. From Edith’s childhood in Norfolk, her training as a nurse and her appointment as a matron at a new training school for nurses in Brussels. The Great War interrupted Edith’s nursing career and drew her into a world of helping Allied soldiers escape to neutral Holland, leading the Germans to arrest and charge Edith with treason and execute her at dawn on 12th October 1915. Melanie’s extensive research provides the story of her life and will leave audiences feeling that they really know Edith.

Meet the Host, Melanie

From being an enjoyable part-time ‘hobby’ the repeat bookings for Melanie Gibson-Barton's talks grew to such an extent that she gave up her 'day job' to become a full-time speaker. Many of her talks have been commissioned by previous audiences for commemorative occasions.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

Most enjoyable with great presentation. Speaker made it feel as though she really was most enthusiastic about her subject and not just another group to speak to.

This was a most interesting talk by an excellent speaker. It added lots of detail to the life of a name I had heard but of whom I knew little about.

So well researched and she obviously has a passion for for Edith Cavell and her brave and selfless life. The presentation was wonderfully upbeat and enthusiastic. Well done!
