Event Description

The First World War is one of the most studied and written about wars in history, and yet at times it can still seem baffling and opaque.  The sheer scope of the conflict, its duration, the politics behind it, and the endless procession of seemingly futile battles have all become part of the “cultural myth” of the war.  But what really happened?  Was the war futile?  Was it all about bungling commanders sending brave men to their deaths?  Was anything learned, and did tactics change between 1914 and 1918?  And how was it that Britain and its allies ended up winning?

In this 8 week course, split into two parts, Dr Simon Gregor will explore the causes, course and consequences of the Great War, and try to get behind some of the myths to examine the reality of warfare.  Focussing on the Western Front in France and Belgium, where most British soldiers fought, he will examine not just the strategy and tactics, but also the lived experience of those who went through it all, drawing on first-hand accounts from those that were there.

NOTE: these sessions last 90 minutes rather than the usual hour.  This is to ensure there is good time at set points during the session for questions and discussion.

Part 1 will comprise of four lectures:

1. The Outbreak of the War

2.1914 – the War of Mobility

3. Trench warfare and trench life

4. 1915 - Stalemate

In January we will run the concluding four parts of the course; you are welcome to attend even if you missed part 1 which Simon ran in Nov-Dec 2024.

5. 1916 - attrition

6. 1917 - a year of learning

7. 1918 - armistice

8. Aftermath

  • Duration: 90 mins x 4
