Event Description

“Let husbands know their wives have sense like them…have not we affections, desires for sport, and frailty, as men have?”

Emilia in Othello, 4.iii

“Frailty, thy name is woman”

Hamlet in Hamlet, 1, ii

Shakespeare was the creator of some of the most enduring and fascinating female characters – Juliet, Cleopatra, Rosaline, Desdemona – all of them complex and rich studies of human beings. In this talk we will look at Shakespeare’s overall attitude to women – how are women generally seen in Shakespeare’s plays? Are they the heroes or the villains? What does their treatment tell us about women in 16th and 17th century England? And how do we approach these characters today?

In this talk, Anna Malzy, a Shakespeare scholar and theatre practitioner, will take you through some of Shakespeare’s most well known – and some of his less well known – female characters, asking what we can learn from them. We will talk about changing attitudes over the centuries to Shakespearean heroines and ask to what extent Shakespeare and his work champions women.
