Event Description

1: Island On The Edge of The World (6th June)

In 55BC, the island of Britain was on the very edge of the known world.

But that was all to change when Julius Caesar arrived with his army

Who were the people who inhabited Britain before the Roman conquest?

How were they organised?

Were they really “barbarians”?

And, how would they deal with Caesar?

2: Invasion & Resistance (13th June)

Nearly 100 years after Julius Caesar had left Britain, the Romans are back, and this time they mean business!

The Roman conquest of Britain is on but not without a fight.

Find out what happened when Emperor Claudius invaded Britain?

Who really was Boudicca and how close did she come to success?

And who on earth was Caractacus?

3: Britannia - The Roman Province (20th June)

For nearly 400 years, most of Britain was part of the Roman Empire.

That period has left its mark on the British landscape to this day.

What was life like in Roman Britain?

Did Britain really benefit from Roman rule?

How Roman did Britain become?

And, what happened beyond Hadrian’s Wall?

4: End of Empire (27th June)

In the early 400’s, with the empire starting to fragment, and the Imperial capital itself under threat, the Romans abandoned Britain.

Britannia was free and they hadn’t even had to fight a war of independence!

But the abandoned province was easy prey for raiders and invaders.

What happened next?

Who were these raiders and invaders?

How long did Roman culture and systems remain in place?

And, how did those raids change Ireland?
