Event Description

1st November:

Amigurumi Crochet – Crocheting Small Stuffed Toys

Amigurumi crochet is a type of Japanese crochet used to make small stuffed toys – animals or characters. In this session, we will explore the basics of Amigurumi crochet and I'll show some samples of items you can make including a demonstration on where to begin, how to stuff and assemble your item. Amigurumi items work up quickly and make great gifts!

Suggested Materials:

If you wish to crochet along during the session:

  • Yarn – small amounts in various colours of DK weight yarn. Light shades of solid colours are easier to see. Do not use variegated/multi-coloured as it is more difficult to see when learning a new technique.
  • Crochet Hook –5.00 mm, size H
  • Stitch Markers (safety pins work well too!)
  • Scissors
  • Fibrefill for stuffing

Helpful but not required:

  • Notebook/Pad of Paper
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Darning Needle

Skill Level:  Advanced Beginner / Intermediate / Refresh Your Skills

You should be comfortable with slip stitch, single crochet (US) / double crochet (UK).

6th December

Crocheting - Granny Squares

We’ve all seen them, the colourful blocks trimmed in black. Granny Square blankets adorned our grandparents’ homes, and were often seen laying across the back of the sofa. Fast forward to 2023 and we’re seeing granny squares come back in the form of vests, sweaters, jackets, ponchos, holiday stockings, blankets and more, all made out of granny squares. This traditional pattern is being used for so many wonderful projects

Join me as I walk you through step-by-step instructions to make traditional granny squares. We’ll cover starting with a chain and a magic loop, changing colours and joining the squares together.

Suggested Materials:

  • If you wish to crochet along during the session:
  • Yarn – Your choice of solid or variegated yarn in DK weight.
  • Crochet Hook size H/8 5.0 mm

Helpful but not required:

  • Scissors
  • Notebook/Pad of Paper
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Darning Needle

Skill Level: Beginner / Intermediate / Refresh Your Skills

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)

Meet the Host, Marlys

Marlys is an avid crafter and has been enjoying needle arts since the age of seven. With a family full of crafters she has learned crocheting, knitting, quilting, embroidery, and even some wood working techniques! Her background includes 30+ years of teaching crocheting to right- and left-handed students at all ability levels, while serving professionally as senior finance manager at a non-profit in Boston, MA.

Preparing for the Event

For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).

We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!

More Information

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)

Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
