Event Description

For our next language taster, we are heading East to explore Chinese.

With its unusual characters and very different cultural background, Chinese can seem daunting for people only used to Western European languages. But in this session, I will be helping you to understand more about how it works and introducing you to some simple phrases.

You'll find out what the different types of "Chinese" are, how the written characters work and why the spoken language sounds like singing.

And as always, you'll learn some of the most important basic vocabulary, like greetings and introductions, so that you can hold a simple conversation. We'll be learning some numbers - and with the way Chinese works you'll soon discover it's easy to count from 1-99! I'll even tell you which numbers are lucky and unlucky and why.

With the usual combination of practical words, help with pronunciation, cultural insights and fascinating facts, join me to get to know a totally different language.

Meet the Host, Sally-Jayne Braisby

Sally-Jayne Braisby has had a lifelong love of languages and has wanted to speak French since she was just two years old. After enjoying modern and ancient languages at school, she did a degree in French and Spanish. Following a successful career in language-related jobs, including finance in the City of London, project management in the translation industry and exports in manufacturing, she returned to university and trained as a teacher. Never one to do things by halves, she decided to qualify for both primary and secondary education. She is now a full-time private tutor, teaching mainly languages, maths and English, including English as a foreign language. She is passionate about helping everyone learn, no matter their background, and about sharing her love of languages with the world.
