Event Description

This event will provide an introduction to the beautiful art of calligraphic writing and illuminated manuscripts. I’ll demonstrate the many types of pens, paper and other calligraphy tools and when/how to use these, and show some of the most commonly used calligraphy hands (lettering styles). We’ll also do some exercises in how to hold a calligraphy pen to make the correct writing strokes.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (a recording will be available)

Meet the Host, Joanna Cooke

I’ve been an artist for over 25 years, and work from my home studio in beautiful Southwest Kerry, Ireland. I’ve also been teaching art online internationally since 2020.

I’m originally from Cape Town, South Africa, where I taught and exhibited regularly and was featured in the SA Artist Magazine. I moved to Ireland in 2021 and set up a teaching studio, showroom and gallery at my home in the countryside.  I also illustrate children's picture books for published authors from around the world.

I’m inspired by nature, and my own art is whimsical with a fresh view on the glorious interplay of the characteristics of animals and the natural world.

My art is created both digitally and in traditional media, and I love working in a large variety of styles and materials. I work predominantly in coloured pencil, ink, watercolour, graphite, pastel and oil paint. Students in my art classes benefit from the fact that I’m not bound to any particular style or medium, so I’m able to draw out every individual’s talent and personality in their art. This versatility allows me to help my students choose the best medium for the styles and subjects they want to create, and help them apply it in a way that works best.

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I watch the live event?

Rest Less events are hosted on Zoom, a computer application that allows you to attend online events just by clicking a link. For detailed instructions, please go to our "FAQ" page, which you can find a link to in the nav bar at the top of the page.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)
