Event Description

12th April marks the anniversary of the first manned space flight by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, just over a decade after the first monkey was sent into space in 1949. This talk will look at how the idea of space travel fed into popular culture in the 50s and early 60s, through comic strips such as Dan Dare Pilot of the Future and Rick Random Space Detective, the BBC pioneering radio drama series Journey into Space, which was the last radio drama to outstrip television in terms of its audience, and, the early Gerry Anderson puppet marionation TV shows Fireball XL5 and its rival Space Patrol. Not forgetting Doctor Who and Lost in Space.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (a recording will be available)

What if I can’t make the event?

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.
