Event Description

Part 1: Music For A Superhero. The Sean Connery, Roger Moore & Pierce Brosnan era.This talk will explore the origin of the Bond theme/s and the composers who created and shaped it. It will take you through how music works in film and how music serves story (and narrative) needs. This particular episode contains references & film clips drawn from Dr. No (1962) & From Russia With Love (1963) up to an including License To Kill (1989).


Part 2: The Transformation. Exploring Bond’s Inner World. The Daniel Craig eraThis video will explore Bond’s continuing journey from a superhero to a man with ‘feelings’ and doubts and dilemmas, and continue to examine the role music has played in the re-invention of our hero. This episode focuses on the contribution of three composers - David Arnold, (Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale & Quantum Of Solace) Thomas Newman (Skyfall & Spectre) and Hans Zimmer (No Time To Die).
James Bond has been an internationally recognised brand for decades. The 25 films which comprises the franchise has given a host of musicians and composers a tremendous opportunity to strut their stuff.  This star cast includes John Barry, David Arnold, Thomas Newman, Bill Conti, George Martin, Marvin Hamlisch and Hans Zimmer. Not least, many pop superstars such as Adele, Shirley Bassey, Billie Eilish, Nancy Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, A-Ha, Madonna and others have also contributed unforgettable performances and compositions in the form of the title song.


Join Amit as he takes a relaxed, enjoyable and fun musical journey through the Bond film collection. Discover the intricacies of the inseparable relationship between story and music and take a long look at how those instantly recognisable musical themes were created and developed.

Meet the Host, Amit Sen

Born in India, Amit arrived in the UK with his family in 1962. Amit gained his first degree in music at Sussex University in 1972 while also attending the Guildhall School of Music where he studied the Viola. Subsequently Amit studied film scoring at the Berklee College of Music USA, and graduated with a diploma in Film Scoring. While at Berklee Amit attended film scoring workshops with Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams,.

Over his 40 year career in music, Amit has composed music for a number of films broadcast on C4, Channel 2 PBS (USA) and ABC (Australia). Amit composed the incidental music for Andorra, a play by Max Frisch, directed by Michael Attenborough at the Falmer Arts Centre.

Amit’s published work includes a series interviews with film composers for Classical Music magazine which included Howard Shore, Patrick Doyle and Dario Marianelli.

Amit was the Head of Jazz Composition and Arranging at the Royal Academy of Music and is currently the Music Consultant to the London Film School. He also regularly lectures to the postgraduate film course at the Central Film School and has been a Visiting Lecturer on the MA in Composing for Screen at the Royal College of Music.

Amit’s enduring topic of interest is how music works with story.

If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.

How do I sign-up for and access the recording? (Recorded events only)

Book the event as normal (as if you are attending live). After the event ends you will automatically receive a post-event email with a link to the recording, as long as the event was recorded. You do not need to do anything else and there is no separate booking process for recordings only. Please note it can take up to 24 hours for Zoom to process recordings.
