Event Description

Dick Van Dyke was influenced by Stan Laurel and Buster Keaton. He started his career in show business as a radio DJ before becoming a part of a comedy double act. Dick later appeared in two episodes of The Phil Silvers Show and in 1959 he made his Broadway debut.

From 1961 to 1966, he starred in the TV sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show and won three Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. International stardom came in 1964 and was cast in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins as Bert, the chimney sweep with Julie Andrews playing the title role. However his cockney accent was said to be one of the worst accents in film history! Four years later he starred as Caractacus Potts in the successful musical film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Today television viewers will know him as Dr. Mark Sloan in Diagnosis Murder. Although he had his demons, Dick Van Dyke had a very successful career in television and film.
