Event Description

Were the first artists storytellers, shamans, or simply early humans leaving their mark? This talk dives into the mysteries of prehistoric cave paintings and carvings, exploring their purpose, meaning, and whether they truly fit our definition of "art." Are these ancient masterpieces pure creativity, spiritual symbols, or something else entirely? Join us as we unravel the secrets of humanity’s earliest expressions!

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (a recording will be available)
Geri Parlby-115-Edit

Meet the Host, Dr. Geri Parlby

Geri’s career has been anything but conventional.  She started out in the fast-paced world of Fleet Street journalism before moving into the glitz and glamour of film PR.

She then decided to turn a lifelong fascination in history and art into a full-time passion by studying for an MA in History of Art at the Courtauld Institute and a Theology PhD at the University of Roehampton.

Since then she has taught at the Universities of Exeter, Plymouth, and Roehampton as well as lecturing across the UK and internationally as an accredited Arts Society Lecturer.

She likes to think of herself as an unconventional art historian—one who examines history through art rather than simply studying the history of art. Her lectures cover an eclectic mix of topics, from prehistoric cave paintings to the art of propaganda, the birth of Fleet Street, and even the early days of cinema. Whether unravelling the hidden messages in medieval iconography or exploring the artistic depictions of medicine through the ages, her goal is always to bring history to life through the power of visual storytelling.
