Event Description

Germany has only existed as a nation state for just over 150 years.  In that  time, its capital, Berlin, has witnessed almost unimaginable change: an East Berliner born in around 1900 would have lived through a period of largely autocratic imperial rule which was finally displaced in the turbulence of the First World War; the painful birth of a democratic republic in the early 1920s, followed by a brief period of economic and political stability before the Great Depression; then they would have endured the rise and rule of the Nazis, and six more years of war; before spectating on the advent of the Cold War, Communist rule and the division of the city by the Berlin Wall.  If they were robust enough to endure all that and live to the age of 89, only then would they finally witness the birth of a modern democracy and a reunified Germany.  Join historian and tour guide Simon Gregor as he takes you on a whistlestop tour of German history, using the city of Berlin as a lens on to a century and a half of change, tragedy, division and reunification.
