Event Description

This enrichment lecture traces the early history of the Dickin Medal, now considered to be the Victoria Cross (VC) for animals. We will learn about the highly driven founder of the award, who created the medal in 1943 to honour the work of animals in wartime, right through to the latest animals to be recognised from recent conflicts. The talk features several accounts of animals that have been worthy recipients of the fabled award and is both deeply emotional and thoroughly inspiring.

  • Duration: 60 mins
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (no replay available)

Meet the Host, Ash Jones

I was born and raised in South Wales before leaving home at 17 to begin a career in the Royal Air Force. I spent 10 years in the RAF, followed by a 23-year career as a police officer in both England and Wales.

Alongside my professional career, I have volunteered with many charitable organisations at various levels, from senior leadership to frontline work. In recognition of my contributions, I was awarded an MBE for services to charity in 2019.

Since retiring from the police in 2020, I now work as a wellbeing trainer for a national military charity. I am also a professional speaker and enrichment lecturer throughout the UK and abroad, as well as a certified funeral celebrant.

Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?

Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.
