Event Description

Join Dr Simon Gregor for another four-part series exploring some of the world's greatest poets!  From contemporary poets to writers of the ancient world, from sonnets to free verse, from all the corners of the earth, Simon will share some of his favourite examples of the poetic form.  Each session will feature around a dozen poems - for the history afficionados there will be a little background on each of the poets and the context in which they wrote, followed by a reading of the poem itself.  Although there may sometimes be a couple of loose "themes" tying the poems together, expect a rich variety of poetic expression within each session, so that hopefully you can revisit some old favourites as well as encountering some new ones!

  • Duration: 60 mins x 4
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (a recording will be available)

Meet the Host, Dr Simon Gregor

Dr Simon Gregor is a historian and tour guide. After completing his first degree in English Literature at the University of Cambridge, he worked for about 18 years as a civil servant. He went on to train and work as a tour guide, leading history, literature and cultural tours across Europe. He took his PhD in history at the University of Wolverhampton, and lectures regularly both in person and online. He has a passion for bringing history to life, in particular by looking at the human stories and impacts which lie behind the sweeping changes of political and social history.
