- DURATION 3 x 60 mins
We will explore the history, highlights and occasional lowlights of musicals on stage and screen, from its earliest appearance in Greek theatre through the golden age of Hollywood to the all-encompassing blockbusters of the modern stage. Each Talk starts from the slightly contentious viewpoint that there’s no such thing as musical theatre!
1) Coming Back A Star – The Broadway Musical (15 June)
The story of Musicals along the Great White Way, and how one tale of Broadway guys and their dolls became the first truly American work of art.
2) Over The Rainbow – The Hollywood Musical (June 22)
The story of how the gimmick of ‘sound’ created the most popular genre in the history of the Silver Screen.
3) Eliza, Evita & Eponine – The West End Musical (June 29)
For so long the supporting artiste to Broadway, this is the story of how the West End eventually became the star of the Musical.
