Event Description

Cox & Kings invites you to an extraordinary talk with Dr Sally Dormer, distinguished art historian and lecturer, who will reveal the splendid legacy of Byzantium as it flourished in Italy. Through her meticulous scholarship and engaging narrative, Dr Dormer will illuminate the cultural and artistic treasures that survive in key Italian cities shaped by Byzantine influence.
Discover the shimmering mosaics and majestic monuments of Ravenna, once a capital of empire, whose early Christian and Byzantine heritage remains among Europe’s most exquisite. Then, travel in spirit to Palermo, Sicily’s historic heart, where Byzantine artisanship mingled with Norman grandeur and Islamic culture to create a unique and compelling tapestry of architecture, art, and cuisine.
This talk offers a fascinating glimpse into two specialist-led journeys by Cox & Kings, Ravenna: Mosaics & Marble and Sicily: Normans in the South, where history, artistry, and local flavours combine to craft an unforgettable experience for the discerning traveller.

About Cox & Kings

Each specialist-led tour is guided by an expert lecturer, like Sally, who collaborates with Cox & Kings’ in-house travel experts to create immersive itineraries, often including private visits not available to the wider public. These journeys centre on distinct historical or cultural themes, with specialists providing depth and colour throughout the tour, both through informal talks and at key sites. Each tour is also accompanied by a local tour manager, ensuring a smooth experience, while knowledgeable local guides enrich excursions with their unique insights and expertise.
