- DURATION 60 mins
Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom, with a population last recorded at 238,800. It is the only island-city in the United Kingdom, and its history can be traced to Roman times. A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth was England's first line of defence during the French invasion in 1545. It is one of the world's best-known ports, is the largest dockyard for the Royal Navy, and is home to two-thirds of the UK's surface fleet. The city is home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior, the Mary Rose and Horatio Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, the world's oldest naval ship still in commission. In this talk we look at the dockyard and some of the fascinating places to enjoy around the city.

Meet the Host, Malcolm
Malcolm began his career as a pharmaceutical apprentice at the age of 15 in 1948, the same time as the introduction of the National Health Service. Following his graduation with a degree in Pharmacy, his work took him to many parts of Britain including 17 years in Salisbury where he was very much involved with the Cathedral and life of the city.
Throughout his career, Malcolm has always had a keen interest in Art, History, and Music so following his retirement he was able to develop these interests to give illustrated lectures to numerous local groups including Rotary, U3A, and WI’s, and for the past 6 years has also given presentations on Cruise ships with Saga and Fred Olsen, sailing to exotic destinations around the World. His presentations are always compiled for as wide an audience as possible and include an amazing collection of images and usually incorporate musical interludes to accompany the subject.
Preparing for the Event
For the best experience, you will need to have Zoom downloaded onto your computer. Please ensure you're connected to broadband/wifi rather than using your mobile phone connection (3G/4G).
We also recommend that pets are either calmly sitting on your lap or in another room, and any refreshments you may require are within your reach!
What if I can’t make the event?
If a recording’s available for the event, you can still register for it and we will send you an email with a link to a recording shortly after it ends.
Will my camera be on and will I be visible to the other people?
Your camera and microphone does not need to be on for you to enjoy the event. The choice about whether to do this is completely yours.
