Event Description

English Heritage cares for one of the finest assemblages of monastic remains anywhere in Europe. Dr Michael Carter will explain how they tell the story of 1000 years of monastic history, from the time of St Augustine in the 6th century to Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th. Drawing on recent English Heritage interpretation projects at sites including Battle, Rievaulx and Whitby, Michael will reanimate the ruins, showing how life as a monk or nun was thought to provide a taste of heaven on earth.
