Event Description

The twentieth century was one of paradoxes. On the one hand, it saw some of the most remarkable breakthroughs in science, technology, health & welfare and broader human progress. On the other, it witnessed the rise of numerous totalitarian regimes which left previously unimaginable scars on entire cultures and continents. In this series of four talks, Simon will chart the rise and fall of four C20 dictators: Benito Mussolini, Josef Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Francisco Franco. What led to the ascendency of these four brutal men, how did they secure and maintain their hold on power, what brought about their demise, and what can we learn from these dark histories? By ranging across the historical context of their lives, their personal characters, and the political frameworks in which they operated, Dr Simon Gregor will examine the life and times of some of the last century’s most brutal and notorious leaders.

Week 1: Benito Mussolini

Week 2: Josef Stalin

Week 3: Adolf Hitler

Week 4: Francisco Franco

  • Duration: 60 mins x 4
  • Online Zoom event: Join from your computer, phone or tablet (a recording will be available)
